I woke up and pressed random buttons on my phone, the clocked popped and showed 2:49 a.m.
“Oh man”, I thought.
Broken sleep again.
But this time, it wasn’t due to any of the nurses going in and out of the room checking up on her.
My sleep gets randomly interrupted sometimes for no apparent reason.
Tonight seems more quiet and less monitored than the night before.
I lifted my head and checked how my grandmom’s breathing.
She seems peacefully asleep with her arms raised above her head.
I stretched and roamed around the room until I heard her breathe faster and heavier.
I stopped and wondered if I should call the nurse to check on her but at the same time, I didn’t want to be overly panicky and hope she was just having a dream.
Thankfully after a few minutes, she breathed normally.
I tried to imitate her normal breathing cycle, it seems much faster than how I am and less deep.
I just can’t imagine right now that there’ll be a phase in your life where you’ll spend some time on a hospital bed during your old age.
or seeing my own mom in the hospital bed suffering from life threatening ailments.
A few days ago, I asked my mom how she felt seeing her mom on the hospital bed for the first time,
“Scared”, she replied, “but then it’s just a phase of life.”
Troubled heart
My grandmom suffered aortic stenosis which affected her breathing. It started on April’s best timing, holy Wednesday.
In the Philippines, Holy week is a long public holiday which officially starts on Thursday and ends on Easter Sunday. Most plan their holidays out of town or out of the country or religiously follow rituals, recollections- taking time to reflect on the death of Jesus Christ.
I was one among those who spent their holiday out of the country, together with my relatives and family.
I could only imagine the tensed situation my other relatives experienced the day it happened.
A close call between conscious and brain dead.
As of the moment, she has already been transferred to a regular room from the intensive care ward.
Members of the family take turns taking care of her on different shifts. Someone has to be there at all times.
Having a flexible and mobile working environment, It was suggested that I take the overnight shift.
Life’s way of telling you that it’s your turn
Life’s quite funny. We all start out helpless as children only to end up helpless as well when we reach old age.
Only this time, roles are reversed. It’s now the children’s turn to take care of their parents, and continue on with their own children.
It’s like nature’s insurance program. Parents, you’d know if your love was worth the effort when it’s time.
This occurrence was also a wake up call for me, to start living better than yesterday.
A chance to show back the love
Our grandmom mostly took care of us grandchildren when we were newly born. It’s her tradition.
I still have photos of her taking care of me as a baby and recently took care of me as well when I was confined in the hospital.
I realize that it’s not easy seeing a loved one on a hospital bed with IV’s and extra devices. It can be quite scary.
I tried to keep a cheerful smile and voice despite the lack of sleep taking toll at times trying to make her feel it’s all going to be better.
I found myself praying with her one night before she went to sleep despite I still have lingering doubts with Christianity.
I felt like a hypocrite. But I just wanted to make her feel peaceful.
Interestingly the next day my grandmom requested me to pray with her again.
Doctors are giving positive reports so far and I hope she will be released soon and well.
Though I’ve also heard horrible consequences as well from other families who have experienced this.
I hope not.
But then again, just like my mother said, “It’s just a phase of life to go through”
**Update 1 May 2012**
I heard that the catheter has been removed and she is being toilet trained to live a normal human life. It will be her 5th week soon in the hospital.
Salute to all nurses dealing more of these things everyday.
**Update 28 April 2012**
The doctor came by this morning and remarked her vital signs are quite good. Some of the medications are gradually being decreased and now monitoring her bladder control. At my grandmom’s home, preparations are being made to care for her in-house along with some special equipment.
It’s interesting how she can tell lots of stories with one simple question I ask.
She talked about how prayer worked miracles in her life.
How she prayed for people who didn’t treat her right.
Stories about how she overcame her struggles with my great great grandmother and other family challenges she encountered.
Stories how my great grandmother trained them as children. My great grandmother actually experienced foot binding yikes!
**Update 27 April 2012**
It’s my overnight shift again at the hospital.
In my personal observation, her breathing pattern seems much slower now than the previous nights I’ve stayed.
It’s been an interesting night so far.
My grandmom suddenly had the mood to tell me stories about her love life.
How she and my grandfather met, How sweet they treat each other currently and rarely fight.
My grandad even got teary eyed after they spoke on the phone. Awwwww
She also told me stories about her suitors and her decisions. How matches were made in the past. Apparently there were professional matchmaking agents lol.
She also shared her motherly instincts, how she knew when her child has a deep problem.
It’s the first time I saw her laugh and smile during my stay.
Hope she’ll be released soon!
Thank you for all your prayers.

**Update 25 April 2012**
She threw up recently. We suspect its due to the antibiotics instructed by the doctor.
Her appetite decreased as well.
